Terbinafine

Brand Names: Lamisil

Drug Class: Allylamine antifungal

Overview

Terbinafine is an antifungal medication used topically to treat common dermatophyte infections. It works by inhibiting fungal ergosterol synthesis, leading to fungal cell death. The cream formulation is applied directly to affected skin areas for 1-2 weeks depending on infection location.

Mechanism of Action

Terbinafine inhibits squalene epoxidase, a key enzyme in fungal ergosterol biosynthesis. This inhibition causes accumulation of squalene and depletion of ergosterol, disrupting fungal cell membrane integrity and leading to fungal cell death.
