Overview
Minoxidil is a topical vasodilator used to stimulate hair regrowth in androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern hair loss). It promotes hair follicle proliferation and prolongs the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle. Clinical effects typically become noticeable after 4-6 months of consistent use.
Mechanism of Action
Minoxidil is a potassium channel opener that causes vasodilation of cutaneous blood vessels, increasing blood flow to hair follicles. It also directly stimulates hair follicle epithelial cells, prolongs the anagen phase, and may have anti-androgenic effects at the follicular level.
Indications
- Treatment of androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness) in men
- Treatment of female pattern hair loss in women
- Promotion of beard growth in men with patchy facial hair
Common Doses
- 2% topical solution
- 5% topical solution
- 5% topical foam
Dosage
Apply 3-6 drops of minoxidil serum directly to clean, dry scalp in areas of hair loss. Massage into scalp with fingertips for 1 minute. Use twice daily for optimal results. Wash hands thoroughly after application.
Contraindications

- Scalp irritation, inflammation, or infection at application site
- Use on children under 18 years of age
Side Effects
- Scalp irritation, dryness, or flaking
- Localized pruritus (itching)
- Contact dermatitis
- Hypertrichosis (unwanted facial hair growth)
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Tachycardia (rare with topical use)
Interactions
- Potential additive hypotensive effects with other vasodilators
- No significant food interactions documented
- Caution with concurrent use of topical corticosteroids or retinoids on same area
Counseling Points
- Apply to clean, dry scalp twice daily for optimal results
- Wash hands thoroughly after application to prevent unwanted hair growth on hands
- Be patient - visible results typically take 4-6 months of consistent use
- Do not apply more than recommended dose; increased application does not improve results
- Avoid applying to other body areas to prevent unwanted hair growth
- Continue use to maintain hair regrowth; discontinuation may lead to loss of new hair within 3-4 months
