Mebeverine Hydrochloride

Brand Names: Duspatalin Retard

Drug Class: Musculotropic antispasmodic

Overview

Mebeverine hydrochloride is an antispasmodic agent used primarily for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other functional gastrointestinal disorders. It acts directly on the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract to relieve spasms without affecting normal gut motility.

Mechanism of Action

Mebeverine is a musculotropic antispasmodic with a direct action on the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract. It inhibits the influx of calcium ions into smooth muscle cells, which prevents muscle contraction and reduces spasms. Unlike anticholinergic agents, it does not affect normal gut motility.
