Mebeverine

Brand Names: Duspatalin

Drug Class: Musculotropic antispasmodic

Overview

Mebeverine is an antispasmodic medication used to treat functional gastrointestinal disorders, particularly irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It acts directly on the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract to relieve spasms and associated pain without affecting normal gut motility.

Mechanism of Action

Mebeverine is a musculotropic antispasmodic with a direct action on the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract. It inhibits phosphodiesterase, leading to increased intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), which causes smooth muscle relaxation. Unlike anticholinergic agents, it does not affect autonomic nervous system function.
