Overview

Magnesium citrate is an osmotic laxative used for relief of occasional constipation. It works by drawing water into the intestines to stimulate bowel movements, typically producing results within 1/2 to 6 hours. This product is available as an oral liquid formulation.

Mechanism of Action

Magnesium citrate acts as an osmotic laxative by increasing water content in the intestinal lumen through osmotic forces, which stimulates peristalsis and promotes bowel evacuation.

Indications

  • Relief of occasional constipation (irregularity)

Common Doses

  • 10 fl oz (typical adult dose)
  • 7 fl oz (children 6-12 years)
  • 3 fl oz (children 2-6 years)

Dosage

Shake well before using. Drink a full glass (8 ounces) of liquid with each dose. May be taken as a single daily dose or in divided doses. Adults and children 12+: 6.5-10 fl oz (max 10 fl oz/24h). Children 6-12: 3-7 fl oz (max 7 fl oz/24h). Children 2-6: 2-3 fl oz (max 3 fl oz/24h). Children under 2: consult physician.

Contraindications

  • Renal impairment or kidney disease
  • Intestinal obstruction or ileus
  • Hypersensitivity to magnesium citrate
  • Severe abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting

Interactions
