Ivy Leaf Extract

Brand Names: Prospan

Drug Class: Herbal expectorant, Mucolytic agent, Bronchodilator

Overview

Ivy leaf extract is a herbal medicinal product derived from the leaves of Hedera helix (common ivy). It has been traditionally used for its expectorant and bronchodilatory properties in the treatment of acute and chronic inflammatory bronchial conditions. Clinical studies support its efficacy in reducing cough frequency and severity in respiratory tract infections and bronchitis.

Mechanism of Action

The exact mechanism is not fully elucidated but is believed to involve several actions: 1) Saponins (especially hederacoside C and alpha-hederin) stimulate bronchial secretion and reduce mucus viscosity, acting as an expectorant. 2) Beta2-adrenergic effects leading to bronchodilation. 3) Anti-inflammatory and spasmolytic properties on bronchial smooth muscle.

Indications

  • Symptomatic treatment of acute inflammatory bronchial conditions associated with cough and mucus hypersecretion
  • Chronic inflammatory bronchial conditions
  • Supportive therapy for cough in respiratory tract infections

Dosage

Dosage varies by formulation. For Prospan syrup (common in Jordan): Adults and adolescents over 12 years: 5 ml three times daily. Children 6-12 years: 5 ml twice daily. Children 2-6 years: 2.5 ml three times daily. Children under 2 years: 2.5 ml twice daily (under medical supervision). Take with water, preferably after meals.
