Overview

Dimetindene maleate is a first-generation H1 antihistamine with antipruritic and mild sedative properties. It is used for the relief of allergic conditions and itching. It is available in oral drops and topical gel formulations.

Mechanism of Action

Dimetindene is a competitive antagonist at histamine H1 receptors. It blocks the action of histamine released during allergic reactions, thereby reducing: Pruritus Vasodilation Increased capillary permeability As a first-generation antihistamine, it can cross the blood-brain barrier and may cause sedation.

  • Itching (chickenpox
  • Allergic rhinitis
  • Urticaria
  • Drug and food allergies
  • Pruritus of various origins
  • Localized itching
  • Contact dermatitis
  • Localized itching

Dosage

Oral Drops: Adults and children ≥12 years: 20–40 drops, 3 times daily Children 1–12 years: 2 drops/kg/day divided into 3 doses Topical Gel: Apply 2–4 times daily to affected area

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to dimetindene maleate
  • Neonates and premature infants (oral form)
  • Use with caution in glaucoma or prostatic hypertrophy

  • Paradoxical excitation (especially in children)

Interactions

  • Alcohol (enhanced sedation)
  • CNS depressants
