Overview
Crotamiton is a topical scabicide and antipruritic agent used for the treatment of scabies and symptomatic relief of pruritus (itching). It is applied directly to the skin and is available as a 10% cream or lotion formulation.
Mechanism of Action
The exact mechanism of action of crotamiton is not fully understood. Scabicidal effect: It is believed to act directly on Sarcoptes scabiei mites, leading to their eradication. Antipruritic effect: The mechanism responsible for itch relief is unknown but may involve a local action on sensory nerve endings.
Indications
- Treatment of scabies (Sarcoptes scabiei infestation)
- Symptomatic relief of pruritus associated with various dermatologic conditions
Dosage
For Scabies (Adults and Children): Apply a thin layer of 10% cream or lotion to the entire body from the chin down (including skin folds and under nails). Massage gently into the skin. Repeat application after 24 hours. Bathe 48 hours after the last application. For Pruritus: Apply to affected areas 2–3 times daily as needed.
