Overview

Cefdinir is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat mild to moderate bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis and is effective against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. The drug is typically administered orally with a standard total daily dose of 600 mg.

Mechanism of Action

Cefdinir is a bactericidal cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), disrupting peptidoglycan cross-linking and leading to cell lysis and death.

Indications

  • Community-acquired pneumonia caused by susceptible strains
  • Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
  • Acute maxillary sinusitis
  • Pharyngitis/tonsillitis
  • Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections

Common Doses

  • 300 mg
  • 600 mg

Dosage

Total daily dose is 600 mg, administered as 300 mg twice daily or 600 mg once daily depending on infection type. Duration ranges from 5-10 days. Can be taken without regard to meals.
