Benzoyl Peroxide

Brand Names: Panoxyl, ACNE TREATMENT (BENZOYL PEROXIDE) GEL

Drug Class: Topical antimicrobial, Keratolytic agent

Overview

Benzoyl peroxide is a topical antimicrobial agent used primarily for the treatment of acne vulgaris. It works by reducing Propionibacterium acnes bacteria on the skin and promoting skin cell turnover. Treatment typically involves once-daily to three-times-daily application to affected areas.

Mechanism of Action

Benzoyl peroxide exerts antibacterial effects against Propionibacterium acnes through the release of free oxygen radicals. It also has mild comedolytic and anti-inflammatory properties by promoting desquamation of the stratum corneum.
